Gym Guidelines – Indian Register for Exercise Facilities

Become an IREFs Member – Gym Facility

Before applying, please review the IREFs Membership Guidelines to ensure compliance. We strictly follow BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) Guidelines, and all listed requirements must be met to become an IREFs member.

Gym Guidelines to Become an IREFs Member

1. Emergency Preparedness

  • Emergency contact numbers such as nearby hospital, police, Fire, ambulance service provider, doctor, physiotherapist, and nutritionist etc . must be available and prominently displayed at the reception.
  • A well-defined Emergency Action Plan (EAP) with contact details must be displayed in the reception area.
  • Gym must have coordination with local police or authority for security or emergency situations. (Not needed)

2. Facility Maintenance & Safety

  • Regular maintenance of gym equipment must be carried out and recorded.
  • The gym name must be clearly displayed at the entrance with adequate illumination.
  • CCTV cameras must be installed and in working condition to ensure safety and surveillance.
  • A valid, operational fire extinguisher must be available.
  • First aid kit and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) must be readily available and accessible.

3. Staff & Professional Requirements

  • A receptionist who can communicate in at least the local language must be present.
  • Gym trainers must:
    • Be 18 years or older with valid identity proof (Aadhaar card or Voter ID).
    • Have 10+2 qualification in any stream.
    • Be trained in equipment usage and maintenance.
    • Possess a National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 4 Fitness Trainer certificate recognized by Sports, Physical Education, Fitness and Leisure Sector Skill Council (SPEFL-SC).
    • Hold a First Aid certificate from a government-accredited institute.
    • Hold a CPR/AED certificate from a recognized/accredited institute.
    • Complete a 450-hour certified fitness training course + 60 hours of on-the-job training/internship from a recognized/accredited institute.
  • Trainers must display their NSQF Level 4 certificate and their CPR, First Aid & AED Certificate at the reception.

4. Member Registration & Ethical Practices

  • Each member must fill and sign a membership/enrollment/inquiry form.
  • Receipts must be provided for all fee payments.
  • Steroids or performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) must not be sold, stored, or promoted in the gym.

5. Essential Facilities

  • Potable drinking water must be available.
  • Changing rooms must be clean and accessible.
  • Preferably, separate washrooms for male and female members.
  • Proper lighting must be provided in the activity/exercise area.

6. Space Requirements (Minimum)

  • Resistance Training: 2.0 m² / machine
  • Cardiovascular: 1.5–2.0 m² / machine
  • Free Weights Area: 2.5–3.5 m² / machine
  • Spinning: 1.0–1.5 m² / machine
  • Stretching Area: 2.0–2.5 m² / person

7. Legal & Documentation Requirements

  • Rent/lease agreement (for rented property) or ownership proof (for owned property) must be available.
  • Latest electricity bill of the gym must be maintained.
  • Copy of Gym owner's PAN card must be submitted.
  • Copy of Gym owner's Aadhaar card must be submitted.
