Become an IREFs Member

Before applying, please review the IREFs Membership Guidelines to ensure compliance. We strictly follow BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) Guidelines, and all listed requirements must be met to become an IREFs member.

Guidelines to Become an IREFs Member

Emergency Preparedness

  • Emergency contact details of nearby hospitals, ambulance services, doctors, physiotherapists, and nutritionists must be available and displayed.
  • An Emergency Action Plan should be in place to handle any critical situations.

Facility Maintenance & Safety

  • Regular maintenance of gym equipment.
  • Gym name must be clearly displayed at the entrance with adequate illumination.
  • CCTV cameras and fire extinguishers must be installed.

Staff & Professional Requirements

  • A receptionist who can communicate in at least the local language.
  • Trainers must display their professional degree or NSQF Level 4 Certificate at the reception.
  • Gym trainers must:
    • Be 18+ years old with identity proof (Aadhaar/Voter ID).
    • Have knowledge of equipment usage and maintenance.
    • Hold a 10+2 qualification in any stream.
    • Possess First Aid & CPR/AED certificates from institute recognized/accredited by the government.
    • Complete a 450-hour certified gym/fitness trainer course from institute recognized/accredited by the government/sports sector skill council (SPEFL-SC) + 60 hours of on-the-job training/internship.
    • Meet the standards of National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) Level 4.

Member Registration & Ethical Practices

  • A membership/enrollment/inquiry form must be filled and signed by each member.
  • A receipt must be provided for all fee payments.
  • No steroids or performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) should be sold or promoted in the gym.

Essential Facilities

  • First aid kit and automated external defibrillator (AED) must be available.
  • Proper lighting in the activity area.
  • Potable drinking water and changing rooms should be provided.
  • Preferably, separate washrooms for male and female members.

Space Requirements (Minimum per machine/person)

  • Resistance training: 2 m²/machine
  • Cardiovascular equipment: 1.5–2 m²/machine
  • Free weights area: 2.5–3.5 m²/machine
  • Spinning area: 1.0–1.5 m²/machine
  • Stretching area: 2.0–2.5 m² per person
